Last Friday TheBLACKMedia had the pleasure of experiencing October 31st newest celebration: HOWELL-EEN. It was magical! Celebrity entertainer Maria Howell, best known for her work in film and tv; “The Color Purple”, “Devious Maids”, “Revolution” and now starring opposite Sharon Leal in Zanes “Addicted” is not only a talented actress, but a sultry Jazz Queen!
Friday was a night of elegance, red shoes, fancy wine, beautiful people, and great service. Staged at the breath taking 5 star hotel resort; Mandarin Oriental in Buckhead, Atlanta Georgia, Maria Howell gave us a show!
Maria greeted each guess with a smile and a hug before turning into the Jazz queen of blues and R&B. A fusion of snaps, rocks, head nods, and feet tapping took over the room as super pianist Mose Davis put us in a trance with his electric fingers, coupled with the crisp and soothing voice of Maria Howell, it was the perfect match. Along with her witty banter it was not only a sultry night, but a night of constant laughter and comedy. Maria really knows how to put on a show!
The set was great performing classic Jazz standards, songs, and remixing some of R&B’s best hits. But leave it to Maria Howell to not only give a show, but to give others a chance to share the moment. Maria Howell invited singers; Tomi, Naz, and Nina, to name a few to “sit-in” and share their gifts.
Tomi (picture to the left) is a trained vocalist with a very unique voice, astonishingly different from her speaking voice. Tomi, with her powerful contralto lows and her operatic highs took us on a journey with the Jazz classic “Misty”. It was amazing!
Naz (picture to the right) is a Pakistan Jazz vocalist with a sweet soft tone. This tiny woman serenaded us with a wonderful Jazz piece; “Close Your Eyes”. No one in the room could take their eyes off of her, and even though she’s tiny, her voice is powerful!
Nina (picture to the left) is a veteran Jazz singer with a natural light and humor in the way she performs. Powerful in stance Nina gave us the legendary “If I Never Get To Heaven” humorous, jazzy, and energetic, Nina did her thang!
All in all it was a great night! There were more performers she invited up including Bill Wilson who surprised us all with his virtuoso piano skills, more laughter, more conversation…everything you’d expect HOWELL-EEN to be!
