Synopsis:
Sometimes it’s not about changing someone’s mind, but instead, ever so slightly moving their heart. A 12 year old girl little white girl, a middle aged black woman, and a dusty library in a sandy town are the backdrop of this lesson in the form of a Stageplay. Providence Banks is a rambunctious and gregarious child who serves as a role model for her learning disabled mother Bethanne Banks, and a bothersome inconvenience for her stepfather Jon Banks. Providence is the loud mouthed, opinionated wedge that lives between her folks and Jon Banks makes no bones about it; he’s had it up to here. So when yet another chiding note comes home from Providence’s teacher as a result of her challenging both children and adults with her verbal menacing, she’s sentenced by Jon Banks to do time in the town library. If nothing else, he figures it will keep her out of his hair though he doubts she’ll take the time to learn anything. Maybelle Richards is the janitor in the library and notices Providence has gone from sleeping on stacks of books to actually reading them. They end up developing a mutual respect for one another and an unlikely love/like relationship is born. That is until Providence poses a question about the ever so glorious Maya Angelou. Maybelle becomes defensive, determined to prove that Maya belongs to her and her people. Providence begs to differ and decides to enter a library contest with Maya as her subject, hell bent on teaching HER people about the phenomenal woman. Yours, Ours, & Ms. Angelou presents a simple story about the complicated task of changing minds and hearts, inspiring love where it never lived, and becoming who you were always meant to be. In Yours, Ours, & Ms. Angelou, you’ll find the spirit of a young girl as it collides with the spirit of a black woman who impacted generations and changed the world.
