The Standing Rock Protest Is NOT Over! Thousands Remain In Fear Their Victory Will Be Overturned

Native Americans march to the site of a sacred burial ground that was disturbed by bulldozers building the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), near the encampment where hundreds of people have gathered to join the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s protest of the oil pipeline slated to cross the nearby Missouri River, September 4, 2016 near Cannon Ball, North Dakota.

WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED

As of December 8th 2016, construction at the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline near the Standing Rock’s camp has stopped. April of 2016 the protest began after a private company dished over 3 billion dollars to construct an oil pipeline through Native sacred grounds in North Dakota. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has disapproved this plan since 2014, and today, the dismissal and oppression continues.

Although the same pipe line could’ve been routed through Bismarck North Dakota, an affluent neighborhood who’s demographic lends itself to upper white class women and men (92% as of 2010), who, because of possible danger in oil spills, declined this construction, the company had no issue, with the same danger, to run this pipeline through sacred grounds near the Native’s camp “The Oceti Sakowin Camp” owned by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, which would run under the Missouri River, the primary drinking source of the camp. Oil running under water? How bout no?

It wasn’t until recent that this movement to stop construction made mass media, prior to, no one knew of the Natives struggle with protecting what’s theirs. Even though construction has stopped many natives, celebrities, and people of influence are still standing their ground in fear that if they leave, construction will continue. Many fear president elect donald trump, once in office, will overturn the Obama administrations decision to stop the construction, even though the Obama administration is not the reason construction has stopped, the latter is still daunting. That after all of this work, months and months of protesting, many are sick due to the harsh weather conditions, many haven’t showered for weeks, etc. that donald trump could very well move ahead with construction once in office.

Update From Frontline Natives;

Even though this event is riddled with harshness, racism, oppression and cultural smudging, there were a few positive things that came from it. Army vets joined the natives to protect them against the police! Many Native tribes gathered together to fight for their land, which hasn’t happened in many years. People of colour, Black people in particular, have been exposed to another part of their ancestry, the Natives, Brown/Red women and men who proudly protested planted fit, and fists high in the sky in all of their Black Power glory, unifying us in a way that’s never happened before.

There’s still much to be done. There are ways you can help, even if you cannot make it to Standing Rock. You can visit STANDING ROCK to find out more. White owners have a way of making sure we know they control everything, and we have a way of letting them know, they’ll never control US! Let this be a lesson to all, the Natives are not moving until they know for sure this will not happen again. Too often people of colour fight long and hard, and once one thing is granted we lose our will to fight. Fight for what’s right, promote peace and healing, continue to fight even after that, and everything will be alright.
