BET’s 50 Central Full Review: C+/B-

BET aired the premier episode of 50 Central September 27th 2017 at 10:30pm to many laughable moments. Social media took part sharing their oh my God’s, that was funny’s and what could be better. 50 Cent helms the comedic variety show as one of the executive producers and stars with a cast full of new comedians.

“These cracka ass crackasss got a ni*** tripping up”

The show stars Tristen Winger, Jasmin Brown, Kiya Roberts, Vince Swann, and Mark Harley five actors pretty new to the scene, but not really. Each actor comes with a memorable resume, but new enough for us to grow with them. Even though only one episode has aired, here’s our full review of the show thus far, and as the show progresses, the updates to come, including ratings. The show has aired about 5 episodes, and while the sketches have gotten funnier, the viewership, and suggestions below, haven’t changed. With a consistent viewership of about 250,000 per episode, it’s a great show to watch to settle your night. [10.24.17]

50 Central Review: B-

Coming in at a strong C+, which slightly changed to a B- after four episodes. 50 Central wins in originality, show structure, musical elements, and fresh faces. Unfortunately the show lacks in cohesiveness, comedic landing, visual appeal, delivery, and staying current.

Suggestions:

Cohesiveness: Scene by scene edits brought visual confusion in colour grade, sharpness, and the cast blended appeal. If the scenes matched in light and darkness, sharpness, and if the cast presented more comfortable with each other, the show would be super smooth. Viewers like to think their cast hangs out after the show, not just work together.

Comedic Landing: While most of the jokes landed, when they didn’t it was cringe worthy. The intro to the street segment of smash, marry, kill with the outdated Michelle Williams joke was turnable. Moments like these can’t happen, especially before an awesome segment.

Visual Appeal: The quality of camera's used throughout BET non-flagship shows are ridiculous. The commercial and photos (and promo below) shouldn't be at 100 percent quality and the show lack in proper lighting, color grading, set display, and capture. Use the same techniques, cameras, and color grading as the commercials, and this could look like something.

Delivery: It seemed like some the cast was over rehearsed. Considering some of them are well known on social media for their random videos, you'd think their delivery would be smoother, but it fell flat. These actors shouldn't be acting funny, they should just be funny. Acting classes, or a word with the director could fix this problem.

Staying Current: The writing fell flat. Even though the show wins in originality, some of the writing sketches, and ideas are extremely dated. While the performance and overall final was ok, if there were current topics, games, questions, and segments, this show could render millions of viewers.

All in all, the show’s premiere was a strong C+/B-. You will be unable to stop smiling as you’re watching the sketches, moments in-between, not so much. While it may be legal for shows to not give credit to those who suggest things via online, if BET, 50 cent or anyone involved is reading this and decides to use these suggestions, can you hit a brother up?
