Ava DuVernay won for Entertainer of the Year at the 2018 NAACP Image Awards and delivered a unifying speech. Ava strongly pointed out the many amazing Black leaders in film and television including: Shonda Rhimes (Scandal, Grey’s, HTGAWM), Kenya Barris (Black-ish), Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), Will Packer (Girls Trip), herself, and many more. Ava screams; “this is our time” in proudness that she’s able to witness this greatness and be apart of it, but the undertone is a call for action. While having those people are great, the call to action is, we need more people.
The fact that most of the leaders, movers and shakers in Black entertainment were on a short list she could hold in her hand let’s us know, we are doing great, but we’re not done yet. Its a great time to be inspired by those at the forefront, but an even greater time for them to usher in, right now, new, young, and inexperience talent. That’s the only way we will continue our epic wins without a hiccup in time.
