Academy award winning actress and comedian Mo’Nique calls for a NETFLIX boycott after being low-balled on a comedy special. MoNique was offered $500,000 for a comedy special and was told her resume was not the reason. When MoNique asked NETFLIX how Amy Schumer, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle made millions with their comedy specials, NETFLIX mentioned Amy’s resume. In confusion, and disbelief of the disrespect, Mo’Nique made a video calling for a boycott.
Mo’Nique is a major celebrity, with major accomplishments: BET Awards, Golden Globe Award, Image Awards, and of course her amazing Oscar win. As a relevant actress and recent prime time Emmy award nominee for Bessie (starring Queen Latifah), and a current touring Comedian with consistent sold out shows, and self produced specials, Mo’Nique is worth more than $500,000. It seems like #TimesUp for Mo’Nique and this racial and gender financial disparity. Citing Amy Schumer’s sold out show at Madison square garden as the reason for her millions of dollars, as if Mo’Nique wouldn’t bring viewers to her comedy special on NETFLIX, is not only rude, but wrong.
MoNique has millions of fans (literally not figuratively), a lot of which are millennials who grew up watching and rewatching, Queens Of Comedy, The Parkers, her hit late night show (making her the first Black woman to have one) The MoNique Show, and several of her comedy shows. So, if the fear o not having the “younger audience” was the issue, its an unnecessary fear. If you put MoNique on Netflix, millions of people would watch, not just because she’s MoNique, but because she is hilarious! A brilliant comedian, and according to NETFLIX, a Legend?
If relevance was the reason for the low balling, its also incorrect. Unfortunately MoNique made major headlines after Lee Daniels offered her the role of Cookie on EMPIRE, didn’t confess to it, and she outted him with documents. This, in part, not only increased her relevance, but she released several successful films, was seen on major talk shows, and more since.
MoNique is not a name you forget, she’s one of the funniest Black comedians in the country, who’s years in the business extends far beyond most, and equal to some. So then, why is it that MoNique was offered such a low compensation? Is it because she’s Black? Is it because she’s a woman? Is it both?
Tracee Ellis Ross recently asked for a raise at Black-ish considering Anthony Anderson makes almost double what she does, and they are co-stars. So the question becomes, does a Woman have to be a Black male, or a White woman in order to be payed what they are deserved? Dave Chappelle and Amy don’t have oscars, hit films, and a successful radio show. But they are deserving of what they get, and MoNique is deserving of what she deserves.
