The trump administration is heavily considering reversing Obama’s inclusive work with the Trans and LGBTQ community by legally narrowing the definition of gender. Under the Obama administration, for the LGBTQ community to have rights, more specifically the Trans community, the legal definition of gender, pertaining to Federally funded programs (health care, education etc) was extended to mean; “an individuals choice, not determined by the assigned sex at birth”.
Instagram’s Racial Bias EXPOSED!
The trump administration wants to reverse that, and change the definition to; “an unchanging biological state determined only by the genitalia one is birthed with.” If they succeed this will reverse those federal funded rights to the LGBTQ community in major sectors such as education and health care. There are over 1 million people who currently identify as Trans, and this change could bar these individuals from access to basic human rights as they identify, forcing Trans people to choose and belong to something they simply will never identify with, because it’s not who they are. Male, or Female.
Trans people will not be erased, and community leaders like Laverne Cox, and Janet Mock are using their platforms and voices to make sure this is brought to the masses, and fought.
Trans Women and Trans Men, backed by the American Psychiatric Association and American Medical Association, which indicates not all trans people suffer from dysphoria, shows that not only do the medical community agree that being Trans is not a mental condition, but that Trans people deserve health coverage, and to be legally identified as they are, Trans.
New York Times;
“The new definition would essentially eradicate federal recognition of the estimated 1.4 million Americans who have opted to recognize themselves — surgically or otherwise — as a gender other than the one they were born into.
‘This takes a position that what the medical community understands about their patients — what people understand about themselves — is irrelevant because the government disagrees,’ said Catherine E. Lhamon, who led the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights in the Obama administration and helped write transgender guidance that is being undone.”‘
