The 2019 Grammy award nominations are in and Janelle Monae, Cardi B, H.E.R, and Drake lead in Album of the Year! The Grammys nominations were released Friday Dec 7th 2018, with much surprise to the major categories. The 2019 Grammy awards will air February 10th 2019 on CBS.

With H.E.R being nominated for Album of The Year, it marks the first time in a long time, maybe even one of the first times, that a new artist is nominated for Album of the Year, and Best New Artist, with SOUL/R&B being their main genre. No one saw that coming!
Cardi B’s nominations surprised many music listeners as she holds five nominations this year. Two of Cardi’s noms, Album of the year, and Record of the year, are major categories for a first time grammy nom.
Janelle Monae was an announcer this year, and while announcing the Grammy nominations she teared up after realizing her album “Dirty Computer” was nominated for Album of the Year! With the album being a powerful ode to the LGBTQAi community, and her own coming out of sorts, its a major win for the nominee, and a deserving one.
Even though nominations are exciting, its the wins that matter, and let’s not forget, Jay-Z was one of the most nominated artist at the 2018 Grammy awards and took home zero Grammys. Too often Black artist seldom win in major categories.
Childish Gambino earned nominations in major categories, two of which nominated the hit song “This Is America”, which was a major wake up call for music listeners, and the industry. Even though many felt like he said a bunch of nothing, and the imagery was lost on the message, it was powerful enough to reach millions and earn him several nominations.
The 2019 Grammy awards has a mixed inclusive list of nominations that reflect what people are listening to and revering. The Grammys is supposed to mark artistic excellence throughout the year in music, even though many may not agree, this year the Grammys are back on track!
