Coko Gamble, lead singer of the Legendary group SWV, recently revealed she was the singer on Will Smith’s Grammy award winning hit song “Men In Black”. While some may’ve already known this, for most, it was a nostalgic surprise!
Coko shared, in an interview on the growing “Ask A…” show via KevOnStage youtube channel featuring Kevin, and Doboy, that she was stopped, by her label, from being in the “Men In Black” music video. Will Smith’s “Men In Black” record was released in 1997, accompanying the 500 million dollar box office movie. The following year the record, that Coko lended her vocals on, won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. Coko regretted not being in the music video, but who knew it was even her!?
Coko and SWV parted ways, but was still obligated by the label and the label did not want Coko to appear in the music video. Coko says the check was nice, so not appearing in the music video didn’t bother her as much. Watch at 34:00.
Coko sings the melodic sample of “Forget Me Nots” by Patrice Rushen singing; “here comes the Men in Black”.
