Oct 1st Is National Melanin Day — Its History And Why Its Important

What Is National Melanin Day?

National Melanin Day, October 1st, encourages and inspires the celebration of Melanin Enriched Skin. Too often is whiter skin celebrated as the golden standard of beauty while Brown/Black skin is often compared to as a less desirable skin type.

The lack of representation and inclusion in TV, Film, Education, Medicine, Politics and various forms of media has help to birth colourism in many communities around the world, starting with America. So National Melanin Day was created to combat colourism, educate around what it is, and how we can be healed from it.

If seeing positive images centered around the beauty of your melanin enriched skin and the cultural impact it’s had is what you’re interested in celebrating, then National Melanin Day is for you!

How to Observe?

Use #NationalMelaninDay via social media and proudly post your skin. Create videos and content around the beauty of your skin making sure to highlight your accomplishments as a Melanin Enriched person.

Who Founded National Melanin Day?

National Melanin Day was founded by me, Tahir Register, owner of TheBLACKMedia.org. After applying to the National Calendar website to make this day as official as possible, I realized there was a long waiting period. In an effort to bring awareness in 2019, I decided to do a soft launch, and maybe, through a social media push by my supporters, friends and family, in 2020 the National Calendar would accept my day and make it an official yearly celebration.

After seeing the amount of days of awareness and celebration that often made me think; “why is this a national day?” I decided to create something that could empower my people, while bringing National Awareness to an issue of colourism by changing the narrative of what the standard of beauty is.

How Can We Join?

Simply post a photo/video of yourself celebrating your Melanin Enriched skin with the hashtag #NationalMelaninDay on October 1st 2019. You can also hashtag #TheBLACKMedia and tag @TheBLACKMedia on Instagram and Twitter, and @OfficialBlackMedia on Facebook.
