Sheléa is the music industry’s best kept secret, but she shouldn’t be. Her new single; “Never Give Up On Love”, is a traditional R&B/Soul record. With the current music climate of carbon copies, and lifeless music, traditional has become the new sound.
Sheléa is GRAMMY-nominated, a pianist, songwriter, actress, and powerhouse vocalist. Quincy Jones himself said Sheléa is ‘one of the greatest artist of our time’, and she’s even become one of his proteges. Having worked with Stevie Wonder, David Foster, and to’ve performed at Carnegie Hall, The White House, and as Dorinda Clark Cole in “The Clark Sisters” biopic, all without a record deal, makes Sheléa an anomaly!
When you hear Sheléa sing you no longer start to question why she’s in so many important rooms, with the most important people in the music industry.
“Never Give Up On Love” Review:
As the song starts you are immediately transported into the story with a classic church organ, that traditional lead up to the drop of the drum, and that familiar constant tapping of the cymbal that we love so much. Instantly “Never Give Up On Love” reminds you of an Aretha Franklin record that prepares you for some insane vocals to come… Sheléa did just that!
As much as this is a traditional R&B/Soul record, the producers did a great job modernizing it just enough to make sense for present time. It doesn’t feel old, it feels like an ode to a time when vocals, lyrics, musicianship, and storytelling was coveted. It feels like a tribute, or a place where only the best of the best can belong, and Sheléa is the gatekeeper.
The melody is perfect. It’s a simple standard melody, which allows Sheléa to take the song to different heights vocally that a sonically busier record wouldn’t have space for. This type of record is for sangers only.
The chorus is simple, a fun call and response affirming lyric that helps remind you to; “never give up, never give up, on love.” The church breaks within the second verse, and cinematic hits really elevate the records excitement for what’s next, which is all Sheléa! Sheléa truly elevates this record vocally.
Sheléa does not hold back, but is also not using her full power, which says a lot, because once you hear “Never Give Up On Love”, and how she soars through this record like a crooner singing for their life, you’d think she gave it all, but trust me, there’s more.
“Never Give Up On Love” is a worthy record to purchase, not just stream. Do yourself a favor and add this to your playlist. Don’t be surprised if you hear this record on tv and in films, there’s a power in this record and hopefully Sheléa doesn’t stop here. We need more of this. A shift is happening in R&B/Soul, and it’s Women who are moving the needle.
