Solange Knowles’s “A Seat At The Table” Is The No. 1 Album In The Country With No Promo

Well Deserved…

Solange scores her first Billboard 200 number one hit album with “A Seat At The Table”. What’s so great about this achievement for the 30 year old singer-songwriter is that she achieved this success without promotion! While that may seem like the norm for artist now-a-days, what’s special about Solange over the others, is that Solange’s fan base is used to seeing her push albums through radio interviews and appearances which typically help her reach first week sales of around 40k. It was a risky move for the artist, but because of the album spawning inspiring records like “Don’t Touch My Hair” fans shared the record with those who weren’t fans and because of social media sharing her fan base grew and more albums were purchased & streamed.

According to Billboard;

“A Seat at the Table launches with 72,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 6, according to Nielsen Music — a stronger-than-expected start. Of that sum, 46,000 were in traditional album sales.”

Solange’s album was also streamed over 35 million times making her one of the most streamed albums of the first week in October. With no promotion, interviews and appearances, Solange could possibly sell more albums once she does a promotional tour. It’s well deserved as this artist took many years to give us a stew (Jill Scott reference), she didn’t microwave this album, she stewed it and its so good! Solange even states she wrote “Cranes In The Sky” 8 years ago!

Solange;

“I wrote “Cranes in The Sky” 8 years ago.

It was 8 years ago @raphael_saadiqhanded me a cd with a few instrumentals. One was just drums, strings, and bass. I went home and wrote “Cranes” that night in my hotel room.
When I finished writing and creating #aseatatthetable in a little house in New Iberia, Louisiana…..I revisited “Cranes” once again. I called Raphael that night and asked if he would help me to elevate the production on a few of the other songs of the album to see their fullest potential. I am so happy 8 years later Cranes is finally out in the world.”
