#BlackGirlMagic: Nicki Minaj, Lupita Nyong’o, Gabrielle Union, & Aja Naomi King Cover The Top Magazines

#BlackGirlMagic

The November Issue of Elle Magazine, Marie Claire, and Essence Magazine premiere their cover girls and among the coveted spots are the biggest stars in Black Entertainment: Nicki Minaj, Lupita Nyong’o, Aja Naomi King, and Gabrielle Union. It’s #BlackGirlMagic to the fourth power! Never before have I seen such an array of colours in newly issued magazine covers. It’s a beautiful site to see. Each woman covering their respective magazines are at the top of their game and rising even further.

Nicki Minaj is enjoying the success of her last album “The Pink Print”, it’s tour, recent freestyle and what’s to come. Lupita Nyong’o is riding the wave of her latest film “Queen Of Katwe”. Aja Naomi King, a newer face to the business as seen on the hit television show “How To Get Away With Murder” enjoys the historic success of “Birth of A Nation”. Gabrielle Union, with her hit tv show “Being Mary Jane”, and her poignant role in “Birth Of A Nation” is enjoying success all around while promoting the new film she’s starring in called; “Almost Christmas”. Each of these women are dynamic, and its important to see and celebrate that, why not on the cover…right?

Nicki Minaj – Marie Claire Mag – KAI Z FENG

Nicki Minaj On Double Standards;

“When Kim Kardashian’s naked picture came out, [Sharon Osbourne] praised it, and my fans attacked her for being such a hypocrite. So it wasn’t trashy and raunchy when a white woman did it, but it was when a black woman did it? It’s quite pathetic and sad, but that is my reality, and I’ve gotten accustomed to just shutting it down.”

Gabrielle Union – Essence Mag – DENNIS LEUPOLD

Gabrielle Union On Rape Culture;

“As a rape survivor and as an advocate, I cannot shy away from this responsibility because the conversation got difficult. I don’t want to put myself above anyone’s pain or triggers. Every victim or survivor, I believe you. I support you.”

Aja Naomi King/Lupita Nyong’o – Elle Mag – DAN MARTENSEN

Aja On Creating;

“I want to write, I want to direct, I want to produce—I want to inhabit what I think it means to fully be an artist. I always wanted to do that, but I didn’t think I had the tools. Now I look at Viola [Davis] and I look at Nate [Parker] and I look at Shonda [Rhimes] and it’s like, You just do it. You just begin, you know?”

Lupita On Skin Colour Adversity;

“I grew up with a very limited mirror of myself. I watched a lot of TV, but the people on it were always light skinned. And now I have a platform that takes me into people’s houses and onto the pages of their magazines.”
