Stevie Wonder kneeled during the Global Citizen Festival. Stevie not only took one knee, he took two, encouraging us to pray and unify. Held by his son Kwame, Stevie Wonder’s kneel comes in the wake of Colin Kaepernick’s unjust NFL issues. While Stevie’s kneeling may very well be non-related, what’s clear is the message and connection.
‘stand down bigotry….condemn sexism…find love’
Truer words couldn’t’ve been spoken when Stevie Wonder said; ‘It is only through life we can make life happen through ourselves and each other….Our global brothers and sisters, I didn’t come here to preach, but I’m telling you, our spirits must be in the right place all the time.’ If a Legend like Stevie Wonder can take a knee, we can certainly stop watching the NFL until things change. Right?
Stevie Wonder Takes A Knee;
A call for boycott became wide spread in support of Kaepernick, but did we follow through, and why should we? People of colour make up a large portion of many markets, and when we stop buying, visiting, watching, giving, the 1 percent listens. If we actually stick to not watching the NFL, purchasing tickets, etc it would create a nation wide loss of common income for the stock holders of the NFL causing true change. [2:24:21]
It’s only a game, and if we can’t come together to stop watching a game, then we are doomed. Considering the issue at hand isn’t a game related issue, us boycotting is bigger than turning on the TV and catching some entertainment. This issue is not about Colin, or Stevie, it’s about racism, power, class, and ownership. A league that gives millions of dollars to its players and expects them to turn a blind eye to racism is a league that shouldn’t exist.
