In a world where every photo is perfect, every meme is meaningful, and every lace is fronted its hard to trust what you see. The BLACK Media, an Independently Black Owned publication is not only needed, but important in 2018 because when you operate without someone governing what you do, what you say, and how you should look, you operate from a place of self expression, vulnerability, and truth, and let’s face it, that simply doesn’t exist in media anymore.

Why The BLACK Media Is Important:

Aside from the very obvious name similarity, the Black media, as a collective is important. If it wasn’t for the free-born Afrikan Americans in 1827 (John Russwurm, Samuel Cornish) creating the first Black owned and operated news publication Freedom’s Journal, Black media outlet’s today probably wouldn’t exist. In spite of slavery being openly publicized as a positive law in white owned news papers, and existing within that legal system as “free”, John and Samuel, through all adversity published a popular weekly that informed its readers of the hardships of our people.

Now, even though slavery is no longer a physical condition Afrikan Americans face, the oppressive systems of yesteryear still greatly negatively effect Black people, more specifically how we are portrayed, viewed, read, and experienced through media today. And while there are a few independent Black-owned publications, a large number of white owned publications are tightly governed by its puppet masters, who at any moment, can, will, and have stepped in to alter the psychology of its readers for their personal benefit.

When you're independently owned, you control the narrative!

When we control our narratives it’s not a summation of an ill-experienced white person that, through advertising dollars, benefits from an agenda to erase, demean, declass, and promote propaganda that often benefits those of their same complexion. When we are in control we can say what we want, do what we want, and present how we want without the added oppressive factors that we often see in media when it comes to people of colour.

Why The BLACK Media Is Needed:

Black media is needed because it gives people of colour a choice, a chance to see themselves, learn about themselves, and experience what it’s like to be of the same race, but exist multi-faceted. We are not a monolith, and if left up to the devices of white media, we would be viewed as such. Representation matters, and who’s representing us matters, as we all exist in a programmed world that’s often seen through the eyes of ignorant people who don’t look like you.

If someone you've never met, who didn't know your experience, culture, struggles, or ways of living had control over what the world knew about you, wouldn't you have an issue with that?

Independently owned Black media is important, and The BLACK Media is needed as It is providing a safe space for all people of colour in entertainment and news to exist without rumors, gossip, negativity, thoughtless headlines that often lead to extreme misunderstanding, detestable photo diptychs pitting us against each other, highlights that present us as angry, bitter, or savaged, and propaganda that benefits the supremacist’s agenda.

Unfortunately there are only a few independently owned Black outlets that operate this way, but without judgement, those Black owned publications that relish in salacious, gossip filled, what’s tea sis, and cancel culture “news” are, though many disagree, important too.

Only highlighting the positive can be very damaging, which we are witnessing a lot via social media, it can lead to serious trust issues, but when there is balance, there is peace, and The BLACK Media offers balance, understanding, unity, and a proper way to redefine what it means to be a person of colour in entertainment and media.
