Danielle Brooks “Black Woman” Is Not Only Lyrically Powerful Issa Bop!

It’s not easy creating conscious music that bops, but Danielle Brooks, aka Taystee from NETFLIX’s Orange Is The New Black, did just that with her debut single “Black Woman”. We learned of Danielle’s vocal ability via OITNB, but it wasn’t until her 105.1 Breakfast Club interview in 2014 that she publicly announced she is actually pursuing a career in music.

UPDATES ON JUSSIE SMOLLETT’S CASE

Even though it took five years for dedicated fans to get an actual single from Brooks, it was well worth the wait! While fans waited, Danielle showcased her vocal chops on broadway starring in the award winning revival cast of The Colour Purple playing Sofia alongside Jennifer Hudson, and Cynthia EriVo. Even though that role went under the radar for most people, it only made her core fanbase want more.

“Black Woman” is an R&B cinematic bop that speaks to colourism, sexism, beauty, weight, and society’s standards. The bridge of the song lifts you to another element of self love, and sass! Its the right type of production with theatrical drama that helps ease you to sing the heavy lyrical content because it puts you in a place of performance reality.

As a debut single, Danielle is on the right path. There’s a void for strong new voices in R&B and Soul music and Danielle could be the one to make us listen, and inspire a new generation to write songs that matter.

You want my thighs, you want my stride
But not this melanin
You want my hair
But you don't care for this complexion
I'm a black woman
